Leading Dutch newspaper spots Opera Gloves fashion trend

Post by Rommeltje »

A lot of you long for a time when opera gloves come back in fashion. Well, according to Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant's fashion expert, that time is here!

Translation of the text:
If the Long Glove Fits...

The more glove, the sexier: that's the trend for the upcoming season, following in the footsteps of fashion icons of yesteryears such as Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe.

The Icon

Evening gloves are the long gloves that have been enchanting men since time immemorial, often paired with a strapless dress, as Rita Hayworth does in the eponymous film noir classic from 1946, "Gilda."

The evening glove is beloved among striptease artists, burlesque dancers (like Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge"), showgirls (Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"), and starlets like Audrey Hepburn and Jessica Rabbit.

That glove has come a long way, once being a chic accessory for the upper nobility. Before you know it, you're a glove on the hand of a femme fatale like Gilda, slowly unraveling as she sings 'put the blame on Mame.' Her role as Gilda was Hayworth's most famous, haunting her in her personal life: 'They go to bed with Gilda; they wake up with me.' And all because of a glove!

On the Catwalk

At the top of the wishlist for this spring: gloves. From long opera gloves in black leather or transparent (Margiela, Nina Ricci) to colorful and short (Fendi). Gloves are truly everywhere in the summer collections. Anthony Vaccarello even added pairs to every outfit for Yves Saint Laurent. For those who want something different, simply wear one (Givenchy). Also handy: Tod's belt with a special hook for gloves.

The Mortal

On the red carpet at Theater Tuschinski in Amsterdam, where the Videoland series about the life of Patty Brard premiered, actress Eva van de Wijdeven chose an evening glove in a white, thick fabric. It looked graceful, but due to the creasing in the fabric, perhaps a bit messy. The boundary between an evening glove and a rubber household glove is thin in that regard. Especially since the dress is already abundantly pleated, a satin glove would have emphasized the first four letters in 'galant' just a bit more firmly.

Van de Wijdeven's dress was a breath of fresh air on a carpet where mostly unintended odes to the boorish Veerkampjes passed by. Van de Wijdeven's dress was Greek draped and of a Maria Callas-like beauty, with a sash-like asymmetry that more than honored the other name for the long glove (opera glove).

Homework
  • Ideally, as seen on Hayworth, the gloves on the arms should rise exactly as high as the strapless dress at chest height, forming a beautiful horizon.
Suede? Lace? Satin? Leather? There few accessories for which the fabric is as determining for the appearance as it is with gloves.
Ironically, contrasting with the idea that more visible skin is inherently sexier. With the evening glove, the opposite is true.

"He", actually. ;)

Fashion shows are always quite a bit ahead of the actual trend in real life, so this would probably apply to next winter. And perhaps even the summer too, why not? :D
