Email notification is the most likely pop up you may get. or you can just enable the option to open new messages in a new window :P

found it, it was off...turned it on
goto user control pannel -> board preferences -> Pop up window on new private message: ON
I forgot, even if you have popups disabled your browser should notify you that it blocked a popup, then you can allow it or just realize you have a message then
